How to Speed Up Windows 11 Startup

So your PC takes forever to boot. You press the power button, you look away for ten seconds, and when you look back it’s still loading. Maybe there’s a spinner. Maybe the taskbar icons are trickling in one at a time like they’re in no rush at all.

I’ve had that exact laptop. Mine used to take almost three minutes just to get to a usable desktop, and every one of those minutes felt personal. So I spent a weekend actually fixing it instead of just complaining about it, and what follows is everything that worked. No “PC cleaner” apps, no registry cleaners promising a 400% speed boost, none of that. Just the stuff that’s actually doing the slowing down, and how to stop it.

One thing before we start: this article is only about startup speed. If you came here looking for general Windows tips or gaming performance advice, this isn’t that. Every section below exists because it directly affects how fast Windows 11 boots up, and nothing else made the cut.

Why Windows 11 Startup Feels So Slow

Here’s the thing people don’t realize. Windows itself boots reasonably fast. What’s slow is everything that’s attached itself to your startup process over the months and years you’ve owned the machine.

Every program you’ve ever installed had a little checkbox somewhere, usually checked by default, that let it add itself to your startup list. Your printer software did it. Your webcam app did it. That chat program you installed once and never opened again? Also did it. None of them asked you first, not really, and now all of them are trying to load the second you log in, fighting each other for CPU time and disk access.

That’s the real bottleneck for most people. Not Windows. The stuff riding on top of it.

Check Startup Impact in Task Manager First

This is where you start, always. Right-click your taskbar, open Task Manager, and click over to the tab labeled Startup Apps.

Windows actually tells you how much each program slows down your boot — rated Low, Medium, or High. Scroll through that list and ask yourself, honestly, do I need this running the instant I log in? For most apps, the answer is no. Right-click and disable anything you don’t need immediately.

I disabled six things the first time I did this. Spotify, a game launcher, two printer utilities I didn’t even remember installing, a cloud backup tool, and something called “HP Support Assistant” that apparently just sits there doing nothing useful. Boot time dropped noticeably, and I hadn’t even gotten to the other fixes yet.

Rule of thumb: if you don’t touch it in the first five minutes after logging in, it has no business launching automatically.

Make Sure Fast Startup Is Actually Turned On

Fast Startup is a feature that saves a snapshot of your system so the next boot skips a bunch of steps. It’s usually on by default, but fresh installs and major updates sometimes reset it, so it’s worth checking.

Go to Control Panel, then Power Options, then “Choose what the power buttons do.” You might have to click “Change settings that are currently unavailable” near the top first — annoying, but necessary. Once you’re in, look for “Turn on fast startup” and make sure it’s checked. Save it.

Quick heads-up if you dual-boot with Linux: Fast Startup can cause weird file-access issues in that setup. If that’s not you, don’t worry about it.

Turn Off Background Apps You Forgot Existed

Startup apps and background apps aren’t quite the same thing in Windows 11. Background apps keep quietly running after you’ve closed them, syncing, refreshing, checking for updates you didn’t ask about.

Go to Settings, then Apps, then Installed Apps. Click the three dots next to something you barely use, and there’s usually an option to stop it running in the background. This won’t just help your boot time either — it frees up memory the whole time your computer’s on, not just at startup.

Update Storage and Chipset Drivers

This one gets skipped constantly, and it shouldn’t be. Old chipset or storage controller drivers genuinely slow down how fast your hardware gets initialized during boot. Windows Update handles some of this automatically, but not always the best or most current version.

Go straight to your laptop or motherboard manufacturer’s support page and grab the latest chipset driver and storage driver. If you’re on an NVMe drive, the generic Microsoft driver works fine for most people, so don’t stress over that part unless you’re chasing every last bit of performance. The chipset driver is the one that actually matters here, especially on machines that haven’t been touched since the day you bought them.

Check Whether You’re Even Running an SSD

I know this sounds obvious. But an uncomfortable number of people are still booting Windows 11 off a mechanical hard drive because that’s what came in the machine, and nobody ever thought to check.

Open Task Manager, click Performance, and look at your Disk. If it says HDD, that’s your bottleneck, full stop. No software tweak on this list will fix that the way swapping to an SSD will. A basic SATA SSD is inexpensive at this point, and it turns a two-minute boot into something closer to fifteen or twenty seconds. NVMe is even quicker if your budget allows it.

This is the only fix here that costs actual money. But if your drive is mechanical, it’s also the single biggest improvement you can make, by a wide margin.

Trim Windows Services You Don’t Actually Use

A little more caution needed here, since Windows services keep core things running and you don’t want to break something important. That said, there are services tied to features plenty of people never touch — Bluetooth support on a desktop with no Bluetooth hardware, for instance, or the Fax service, which, come on, nobody’s faxed anything since the Bush administration.

Type “services.msc” into your Start menu search. Look for anything obviously tied to hardware or features you don’t use, right-click it, open Properties, and change Startup Type from Automatic to Manual. Manual means it only starts if something actually calls for it, instead of loading every single time whether it’s needed or not.

If you’re not sure what a service does, leave it alone. This step is about cutting obvious dead weight, not gutting the system.

Clean Out the Actual Startup Folder

Beyond what Task Manager shows, Windows keeps a literal folder for startup shortcuts, and some older software still uses it. Press Windows key plus R, type shell:startup, hit enter. Anything sitting there launches automatically at login.

Delete shortcuts for anything you don’t need firing up immediately. This just stops the auto-launch — it doesn’t touch the actual program.

Turn Down Visual Effects on Older Hardware

Windows 11’s transparency and animation effects look nice, sure, but they do cost a small amount of resources, and it adds up more on older or lower-spec machines. Go to Settings, then Accessibility, then Visual Effects, and turn off transparency and animations if your PC has 8GB of RAM or less.

On a newer machine you probably won’t notice much difference. On an older one, it genuinely helps during that login-to-desktop stretch.

Scan for Malware and Bundled Bloatware

Sometimes it’s not a Windows setting at all — it’s junk that snuck in through a free download somewhere. Adware, toolbars, bundled installers, all of that loves nesting itself into your startup sequence without asking.

Run a full scan through Windows Security. Settings, then Privacy and Security, then Windows Security, then Virus and Threat Protection. Pick the full scan, not the quick one. If you download free software often, honestly, do this every couple of months regardless of your boot time, just as good hygiene.

Fully Sign Out of Accounts You’re Not Using

If more than one person uses your PC and everyone just switches accounts instead of signing out, every one of those sessions is still running quietly in the background, using resources the whole time. Fully log out of accounts nobody’s actively using instead of leaving them parked in the background.

Simplify Your Lock Screen

Small thing, genuinely small, but worth mentioning. A lock screen pulling fresh Spotlight images or running live weather widgets adds a bit of network activity before you even reach your desktop. Settings, then Personalization, then Lock Screen — simplify it if you want to shave off those last few seconds.

Fix a Stuck Windows Update Process

Occasionally a stuck update runs quietly in the background and delays your boot while it tries, and fails, to finish installing. If your PC got noticeably slower right after an update, run the built-in troubleshooter. Settings, then System, then Troubleshoot, then Other Troubleshooters. It’s not exciting, but it catches more of these than you’d expect.

Check Your Boot Order in BIOS

This one’s a bit more advanced, so only do it if you’re comfortable in there. Some systems default to checking multiple boot devices, or network boot, before ever touching Windows, and that costs real seconds. Get into your BIOS or UEFI settings — usually Delete, F2, or F12 right after powering on, depends on your manufacturer — and make sure your SSD is set as the first boot device, with anything like network boot disabled.

Don’t touch settings you don’t recognize. This step is about the boot order specifically, nothing more.

Consider a Clean Reinstall as a Last Resort

If you’ve gone through everything above and it’s still slow, and this is an older installation that’s been upgraded across two or three Windows versions over the years, sometimes a clean reinstall really is the answer. Years of leftover drivers, registry clutter, and general buildup are hard to fully undo with individual tweaks.

Back everything up first, obviously. But a fresh Windows 11 install on hardware that’s otherwise capable often feels like a new computer, boot time included.

Keep Checking Startup Impact Over Time

This last one isn’t really a fix, it’s more of a habit. Every time you install something new, pay attention to whether it’s quietly asking to launch at startup during setup, and say no unless you genuinely need it running the second you log in.

Startup slowdown almost never happens all at once. It creeps in, one “helpful” background app at a time, until six months later your five-second boot has somehow turned into ninety seconds again. Checking that Startup Apps tab once a month takes half a minute and keeps the problem from creeping back.

Final Thoughts on Speeding Up Windows 11 Startup

No single fix here is a miracle. But stacked together, most people see a real, obvious drop in boot time — often cutting it in half or better, depending on how much startup clutter had piled up. The three biggest wins, if you only have time for a few: trimming startup apps in Task Manager, confirming you’re actually on an SSD, and keeping chipset and storage drivers current.

Windows 11 itself isn’t the slow part. It’s what we let attach to it over time. Take that back under control, and your boot time stops being something you dread every morning.
